Ten years ago the government could borrow at 2%. Those 10 year bonds have to be refinanced at 4.8%, the current bond rate. The cost of borrowing will more than double from 8bn a month to 16bn, over 100bn a year. And there is nothing Rachel from accounts can do about it.

Interesting times. 10 year gilt rate, 4.8% January is the only month when the treasury receives more in tax than it spends, which allows it to pay off some maturing debt from income. Come February and all debts due will have to be paid by issuing new bonds. Debt has passed 3trn

If Khan was serious about air quality and health, he would donate all the ULEZ charges to a hospital specialising in asthma. He might also tackle air quality on the underground. He will do neither. It's not about health, it's about money.
