⚠️ Over 20 orgs & bereaved parents have joined 5Rights in calling on Govt & Ofcom to strengthen the UK’s online safety regime — not weaken it.
With the Protection of Children Code of Practice due soon, this is a critical moment.
📚 Our joint statement:

"With a code full of holes, @Ofcom has shown that it is unfit to hold the world’s biggest businesses to account"
If we are to protect our rights and freedoms online, address rampant misogyny and #StopImageBasedAbuse, government must stand up to Big Tech👇

Ofcom know the well-documented harms of pornography and its links to trafficking and child sexual abuse and exploitation. These are not subjects to be laughed at. Numerous survivors whose filmed sexual assaults have been shared and monetised agree.

And here’s the regulator’s decidedly unambitious steer to a suicide forum responsible for 97 U.K. deaths (‘if it didn’t clean up its act’ then at that stage Ofcom might then take enforcement action) @DannyStone1@OSA_Network@mentalhealth@davidgparfett
While @Ofcom has promised that 2025 will be ‘the year of action’, here’s them telling @frankhersey they plan to ‘be pragmatic’ because some measures ‘can’t be done at the flick of a switch’ @mollyroseorg
One Ofcom employee made light of regulating the prn industry - but over 30 other Ofcom staff also liked it including senior managers.
So well put by Beeban Kidron that we need regulators who want change. That was whole point of #OnlineSafetyActbbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
Anyone interested in @Ofcom regulation of prn should read this by Gemma Kelly @CEASEorgUK about the way a regulatory roles is being advertised.
I'm reading right now about the aggression against teen girls on mainstream prn. I'm not finding it funny.

📋 @Ofcom has released its first codes of practice for the Online Safety Act
🤝 We're urging Ministers to meet with key campaigners who are raising the alarm about gaps in these regulations to urgently address their concerns
With the UK #OnlineSafetyAct coming into effect in March 2025, we welcome new codes of practice and guidance from #Ofcom.
These codes mark a significant step forward in creating a safer online environment, particularly through enhanced protections for women and girls and…
Ofcom’s illegal Code of Practice is bitterly disappointing. Where we needed ambition, we’ve got a set of measures that aren’t commensurate to the risks faced by young people, and it means preventable harm will continue to flourish @mollyroseorg (1/2)
Ofcom's task was to move fast and fix things, but instead of setting an ambitious precedent these initial measures will mean preventable illegal harm can continue to flourish. Delay can be deadly.
Peter Kyle's decision to follow Ofcoms advice on categorisation is the equivalent of sticking two fingers up at parliament. It is a bad move and makes it more difficult for those of us seeking to tackle harm online. The illegal harms codes do not go far enough. Weak and…

But to deal with the root cause, we need a comprehensive approach to safety by design.

Australia has announced plans to implement a social media ban for under-16s, placing responsibility on the platforms and device manufacturers.
Labour MP Josh MacAlister tells #R4Today he believes the UK government should ‘push harder’ to improve support for children online.
We worked hard this year to prevent a particular case of child sexual abuse imagery going viral online. Read the full story here: iwf.org.uk/annual-report-…
Sextortion reports increased by 54% last year.
Sextortion affects hundreds of individuals every day, read our 2023 report to find out more.

One year on from the Online Safety Act I heard from @IWFhotline alongside @NSPCC@5RightsFound@mollyroseorg@barnardos about what measures still need to be implemented to secure the online safety children need and deserve.
