A year from now taxpayers are going to be inundated with ads/pleas/requests from Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) asking you to designate their SGO as the recipient of your $1,700 education tax credit.
Each will have its own purpose.
What purpose would you support?
#SGO
Here's a very interesting article on the $1,700 tax credit for donations to an SGO (Scholarship Granting Organization) starting in 2017. (Discusses in relation to Illinois, but applicable nationwide)

The first sign held up in the video says "Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 people." But only about one in five people struggle with learning to read, so are all poor readers dyslexic? If so, then the definition boils down simply to this: Poor reader = dyslexic.

For phonics instruction to remain ascendant we need:
1. Phonics curricula that are in agreement on basic issues
2. Educators to decide upon specific phonics elements
3. A willingness to look deeper when phonics instruction is failing a child.

Moving from a discovery model focused on “fun” and “engagement” to explicit instruction has resulted in fewer students saying class is boring and complaining about workload. Turns out having an expert explain nuanced concepts so you can actually learn them is fun and engaging. 🤷♂️

Every authority on vision is convinced that deterioration of near vision as you age is, for the vast majority, inevitable and irreversible. I don't agree.

Once kids learning to read understand exactly what a vowel sound is, they find it much easier to make sense of the many vowel spellings they encounter in early reading.
So, what is a vowel sound? And how do you explain it so a child can easily understand?

Exactly, Zach. Proper testing should not drive curricula. To the extent that it does, it should be abandoned.
Because, if testing drives curricula, then education is at the mercy of a handful people who design the tests.

Good point. Learning involves the development of synaptic connections linking neurons in the brain. Over time, more and more connections are made as learning continues.
Eventually, two seemingly unrelated ideas can connect unexpectedly, yielding a new insight to an old problem.

This article on our OnTrack Reading website explains how we explain the concept of a vowel sound to a child. It's quite effective and also leads to an easy understanding of what a consonant sound is.
Hint: It's all about volume.

Interesting. Our main phonics program has the student saying the sounds aloud while printing the letters. This focuses their minds precisely upon what is being learned.
Not being able to easily form letters would make learning the letter-sound relationships more difficult.

Has anyone tried using AI to provide the feedback, at least as a first pass through?
One of the challenges of teaching is finding the time to provide feedback on students' written work. Can AI help there?
Just wondering if anyone's tried it and what your experience was.

I don’t have any data as evidence but after a month of explicitly teaching a knowledge-rich curriculum, I am even more convinced the greatest motivator to learn is successful learning. I’m seeing and hearing it. They want to learn more because they’ve experienced real learning.
I wish everyone was reading about the work in LA and TN, which led with knowledge-building curriculum. Mississippi began encouraging its use in 2019.
I wrote about these state efforts here: karenvaites.org/p/the-southern…
After visiting dozens of schools using knowledge-building curriculum, I can say the anecdotal evidence is vast & consistent.
Also, the Southern Surge states offer strong correlational evidence. And they show knowledge-building curriculum is fueling gains in reading outcomes.
