Skull from the gladiator graveyard of Ephesus. Analysis of the injuries shows the man's head was impaled from above by a trident. The strike was likely delivered execution-style to the kneeling gladiator, after he had lost a bout and proven unsuccessful in any appeal for mercy.
@OptimoPrincipi Likely that man was a Secutor, as Retiarius and them were usually paired against each other. Interesting, but all of it is very tragic.
@OptimoPrincipi Ouch. That not have been immediately fatal.
@OptimoPrincipi There's much modern speculation that gladiatorial games were akin to modern pro-wrestling, ie staged. It may be partly true. Trained gladiator were expensive. Evidently it could still be deadly. The ∅ probably indicate that Astiuus was dispatched by Astacius. Love the hair!
@OptimoPrincipi I’m guessing they didn’t organize and weren’t represented by the Gladiator’s Union.
@OptimoPrincipi @HardcoreHistory “Been impaled from above by a trident and wasn’t your fault? Call us now for a no win no fee consultation”…
@OptimoPrincipi Where are the reparations for the ancestors of these gladiators??
@OptimoPrincipi @MariaGXanthou Though it strikes so cruel, nobody was safe from such an end in the circumstances of those times. So, gladiator games were also sort of training for the spectators.
@OptimoPrincipi It shows us Roman world was incredible full of cruelty examples….
@OptimoPrincipi Is it true that we don't know for sure whether the thumbs up meant spare or kill?
@OptimoPrincipi The family of the deceased should have a second autopsy performed.
@OptimoPrincipi @HardcoreHistory When we gonna get a new series? I'm going through withdrawal
@OptimoPrincipi @DrJEBall The love of violence runs deep in humans. 🤔
@OptimoPrincipi That must have been a forceful blow to penetrate his skull like that.
@OptimoPrincipi God damn it @stevecarell
@OptimoPrincipi @HardcoreHistory What in the world were they smoking back then…to do this to a human being. History is as horrifying as fascinating.
