So what’s next? @NHSEngland are improving hip screening by- ✅Adding the @BSCOS_UK core outcomes to the national screening system (Smart4NIPE)- to allow @NHSuk to implement effective trials in routine care! ✅Evaluating the potential of AI-enhanced ultrasound scanning.👀(6/7)
Our paper in @JAMAcurrent has data on over 27,000 babies and shows that- ➡️Barlow/Ortolani manoeuvres are an imperfect screening tool. For every 1000 hips examined, it detects 4 dislocations but misses 5! ➡️Limited hip abduction & click have no clear diagnostic utility. (5/7)
Newborn screening is based on a hip examination by a clinician in the first 72 hours of life. The Barlow and Ortolani manoeuvres test if the hip can be dislocated/relocated. @MrDanPerry shows the exam here: shorturl.at/aE579 An abnormal exam prompts an ultrasound. (4/7)
