Inovation #4 Sequential Insertion. Once the current is commutated to the solid-state submodules, the IGBTs will open and clear the fault. We don’t wait for the FMS to be completely open but start tripping IGBT modules sequentially.
Inovation #3: New hybrid breaker topology. The main current path consists only of the FMS and is, therefore, very efficient. Once a fault is detected, the fault current commutation circuit, or FC3, commutates the current to the solid-state submodules, consisting of MOVs and IGBTs
The second innovation is the switching dielectric medium for the FMS. We employed the novel use of supercritical carbon dioxide as a dielectric medium, which combines high dielectric strength, great heat transfer capability, and low viscosity.
Inovation #1: Fast mechanical switch (FMS) based on a piezoelectric actuator directly integrated into the switching chamber. This comes with several advantages: First, these actuators are very fast, but just as important, they are very controllable.
EDISON is a DC circuit breaker rated 12 kV and 2 kA with on-state losses of less than 0.01% and a switching speed of fewer than 500 microseconds. The breaker has a hybrid topology with both mechanical and solid-state components.
One of the critical challenges with DC fault current breaking is the fast current rise. The reactance in DC grids determines the rate of rise of fault current, not its maximum. Slow action leads to large amount of energy, which will have to be absorbed by the breaker.
Researcher Highlight: Maryam Tousi is a PDL Research Engineer and leads our EDISON project. She coordinates our research efforts and ensures we meet our project milestones. In her free time, she enjoys movies, baking pastries, and spending time with her family.
