So, the new maquila for services. Will it change tax optimization in Paraguay forever? I just had my meeting with Javier Viveros (Vice-Ministry of Industry specific for foreign investment) and his team. Here is what you need to know.

1. What is the maquila? Maquila is a special tax regime that used to be only for manufacturing. If you did any part of the manufacturing here, you would import and export tax free + get a 1% corporate tax rate instead of 10%. All with the support of the Ministry.

2. WHAT IS CHANGING? Services will soon become part of the maquila program. Exporters of services such as apps, SaaS, digital marketing, sales, graphic design, video production, engineering, etc. will qualify for this program.

3. IS IT BETTER THAN A LLC? Of course. Much more fiscal clarity instead of gray areas, unrelated to US uncertainty, works even if you work from Paraguay, no problem if you travel to the US, full access to PY banks, full government support, gives you substance here, etc.

4. WHERE IS THE CATCH? There is no catch (maybe) or maybe there will be. That's because regulations are still getting passed and there is one point which is uncertain: whether you will need or not to hire local employees and how many.

5. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER Instead of jumping on this train which is already going, assuming something doesn't go as planned, we will work on a parallel project. Giving access to something as cool as a US LLC, but based in Paraguay, to nomads and expats coming here.

6. GOT SOME HOMEWORK I'll start drafting the whole thing as requested, by the amazing team that the Ministry has presented me. Making sure no catches are there. Will take some time, but it's a corporate priority for us and we'll fight for it until the end 💪
