In some Anishinaabe communities north of Thunder Bay they refer to white people as wemitigoozhiwag, which means latecomers. I like that a lot. I like how it centers us as the original people and seems to ask, what took you so long?
In Ojibwe our word for hummingbird is naanooshkaanhs (pronounced naa-noosh-kaanhs). Also translates to the little visitor.
