THE PEOPLE'S JOKER (🇺🇸 US 2022) Free-wheeling anarchic chaos from start to finish, some solid humour & tons of DC in-jokes. Ultra-creative, transgressive, experimental, cineliterate, & punk as fuck. Narcissistic & angry trauma dumping, but at least it's entertaining! SCORE: 6/10
RUSSIAN RAID (🇷🇺 RU 2020) a bunch of current and ex Russian Martial Artists made an action film. Standard revenger plot evokes the Indonesian movies, but isn't at the same level. Still fun seeing non-stop kinetic MMA fights, some of which are ambitious and clever. SCORE: 6.5/10
Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN (🇲🇽 MX 2001) a fiery & spicy Mexican coming of age road movie. Only real turn off is the narration with tons of quirky, often needless details. Engaging story that slowly reveals more information, anchored by thee great and believable performances. SCORE: 8/10
THE SUMMIT OF THE GODS (🇫🇷🇱🇺 2021) Simple animation style, interesting sound design, and the final climb feels quite cinematic. Animation minimises the majesty, scale, awe, and peril of the real scenery, and the fiction + MacGuffin angles feelt like a stretch. SCORE: 6/10
NOSFERATU (🇺🇸 US 2024) beautifully shot with impressive camerawork & production / design. Way too respectful of the original story, contributes very few new ideas to the broader Dracula cannon. Depp and ATJ rip it up, everyone else feels a bit too hammy. SCORE: 6/10
WATCHER (🇦🇪🇺🇸🇷🇴 2002) Creepy, clever, & well-executed set-pieces. Direction is great at building an atmosphere & real sense of dread. Well-acted, looks slick, great design; pleasantly surprised by how premium this is. Solid thriller about men not listening to women! SCORE: 7/10

THE GARDENER (🇧🇪 BE 2025) An enormously silly farce aimed squarely at ageing JCVD fans... and I quite enjoyed it! 20 mins too long, boasts some competent action, but elevated by a surprisingly funny comedy script and Michaël Youn's panto performance. Worth a look! SCORE: 7/10
AGENT OF HAPPINESS (🇧🇹 BT 2024) Fabulous portrait of a country: travels the length & breadth of Bhutan interviewing all types of people. An upbeat and fairly gentle doc, I really enjoyed seeing the land & citizens, but it tapered out a little in the final half. SCORE: 6.5/10
SONGS OF EARTH (🇳🇴 NO 2023) Incredible footage of fjords, mountains, glaciers, & wildlife. That's all there really is though - the director gets some great footage of her parents to savour, but it's not particularly exciting or insightful viewing as a non-relative. SCORE: 4/10
HAPPY NEW YEAR, COLIN BURSTEAD (🇬🇧 GB 2018) British version of Festen, very awkward & wryly funny. Peaked too soon; final 20 minutes petered out. Enjoyable when it's rolling along, and the unlikely ensemble cast of regional treasures only add to the enjoyment. SCORE: 7/10
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (🇯🇵 JP 1988) Harrowing account of siblings trying to survive WWII in Japan. Never fails to amaze me that simple animation & solid voice acting can be *so* emotive. Despite plenty cheery scenes, this was a bit too downbeat and heavy for me. SCORE: 7/10
THREE FACES (🇮🇷 IR 2018) I understand this is "important" & "protest" film-making... but there's too many long scenes & shots that go nowhere. Format straddles documentary & drama, confusing to begin with. Full of regional nuance, but difficult to stay engaged with. SCORE: 5/10
HER BODY (🇨🇿 CZ 2023) an olympic athlete turns to porn after a spinal injury. Great lead performance from Natália Germáni carries the film. Ultra graphic moments! A wild true story with solid & subtle direction, but doesn't go deep into the characters. AKA: Její tělo SCORE: 6/10
KILL (🇮🇳 IN 2023) first half is an economic & impressive blood-soaked hand-to-hand action-fest on a train. The second part dishes up some extraordinary, creative, graphic, horror movie style carnage. A simple movie, but done well. Must-see for martial arts fans. SCORE: 7.5/10
ALL OF US STRANGERS (🇬🇧 GB 2023) Imagine this would hit hard if you were gay, depressed, lonely, or lost your parent(s) young... But this did nothing for me. Great performances (Scott & Bell) but I found this frustratingly slow and full of dated stereotypes. SCORE: 3.5/10
LA CIÉNAGA (🇦🇷 AR 2001) Critically-acclaimed, but easily one of the most miserably boring films I've ever seen. Refuses to throw you even a morsel or interest or entertainment. Wanted to switch off at the 40 minute mark, by the end I wish I had. Absolutely terrible. SCORE: 2/10
JUROR #2 (🇺🇸 US 2024) Well made and presents a complex & compelling situation but it has the dated look and feel of a film from the 1990s. Don't think Hoult is up to the task, but the supporting cast are decent. While solid, it's not a 'southern courtroom' classic. SCORE: 6.5/10
