An example of two people "talking past each other" is when they are talking about the same topic, but one is arguing from a logical perspective while the other is arguing from an emotional perspective. Acknowledgement must occur before real communication occurs.

The minute you respond defensively in front of an audience, you lose them. So, if verbally attacked, respond by acknowledging what the attacker just said, or perhaps their emotional state: "You seem upset. Let's go over here and talk" and move the conversation to a private area.

The biggest problem with leadership education is its bias towards personal development. Organizations want improved performance, which is a function of skills training. The two are not always mutually exclusive, but too much time is spent on one and not the other.

Walking and talking is a great way to have a meeting with another person when on your way to a meeting or event. Even a walk around the block is a good way to take the edge and obstructions (desk/chair) out of a serious conversation. And physical movement is relaxing.
