This is true in all industries, I believe. Once you are hired, it is so much harder to leave. The company has little incentive to give you any real raise or promotion. So hop companies every 2-3 years to get those things. If you don't, you're only hurting yourself.

@ProgramMax Fully agree. Switching companies is how I've earned my biggest pay increases in the cybersecurity side of things, and 2-3 years is usually enough to learn what you can I feel.
@ProgramMax My experience at banks too, and I think it's true for many companies, they view all your raises as a percentage from where you were. So instead of saying 'Rank 6 pays X' it's we promote you from 5 to 6, and offer 10% increase. But if they hire from the outside, they must pay X
