Why do so many people think if the government does something to fix a problem it’ll fix the problem when all experience shows government rarely gets much right?
Next time you’re tempted to refer to “tax expenditure” on superannuation tax concessions…
Take a dose of reality and remind yourself that Treasury work that out by assuming a fantasy in which fund income is taxed at full personal marginal rates (ie up to 47%).
Tax drags on productivity. A “productivity roundtable” has just locked in higher tax to GDP. Argue about fairness if you like, but if the ratio rises it hurts everyone. And the “hard done by” generations will undoubtedly screw the ones that follow.
A tax system isn’t supposed to be about generations, or housing, or behaviours.
It should just raise the least amount of revenue necessary, as efficiently as possible.
It shouldn’t be about big ideas, it should be boring and predictable.
The states apparently have no role to play in productivity - just central government and Australia’s biggest rent seekers. Where’s the media on this? Just trying to get the best leak from inside the room.
Whatever comes out of this it’s clear this federation is screwed
I’d reduce the size of government by 10% immediately, in particular areas where the gov intervenes in the economy. Repealing / rewriting laws takes time - defunding their overlords is quicker. It also sends a large number of ppl into the economy who need to find a way to add…

The states should be the key participants at the productivity round table and the message should be:
- that federal government is the biggest problem, and
- we’re unwinding it.
A big part of reform, needs to focus on institutions - knocking them down, remodelling them, maybe not replacing them.
But the same Club Australia participants, working with the bureaucratic structure, is only going to produce the same mediocrity that defines this country.…
Actually, is anyone attending this grand production going with modelling, or is it all just, “hey we’ve got a great idea (based on no deep knowledge of the subject)?”

It’s strange: we instinctively worry about businesses having too much market power (like supermarkets) and politicians agree we need competition to keep them honest.
But when the Federal government keeps growing more powerful over the states, we accept it without question.…
Project Victoria isn’t about giving more power to this Victorian government.
It’s about putting power closer to the people, with clearer boundaries, less duplication, and more accountability. The goal is less government.
We want one government to do the basics brilliantly,…
@GrayConnolly Poor old Ken had a decade as secretary and apparently wasn’t responsible for advising on tax policy during that time, isn’t responsible in any way for how poor it is, or anything else that’s no good in the economy.
THIS is the approach. Nothing that happens right of the Liberal Party is going to happen quickly. There’s no 4% for @LibertariansAus@LibertariansVic just sitting there, waiting. There’s 10%, if long term thinking and patience is involved.
Also with PV. I get little engagement…

5. Victoria should be independent to restore the moral legitimacy of government.
A government’s authority flows from its ability to serve the people it governs.
When layers of bureaucracy dilute that service, the authority becomes abstract, and democracy hollow.
