The appointment system is a national embarrassment! Too many vacancies and too many board members in carryover. Look at 5 to 10 yrs and will see boards all in carryover, no chair for 3+ yrs, vacancies for 2+ yrs, etc. Crown corporations get short shrift!

So Canada, and others, want it both ways. Recognize via UN the One China Policy, and then do freedom of navigation runs in Taiwan Strait. It is long past time to ditch the One China farce and recognize Taiwan as an independent country and allow entry into IMO.
Ship owners who do not provide adequate communications services for the crew should have higher hull and machinery premiums as they have a higher risk profile.
The grounding, oil spill and subsequent total loss of the Wakashio has been attributed to the vessel trying to get close enough to shore to get mobile phone coverage. 1/2
A small craft like this "Restricted in Ability to Maneuver"? Really, seem like a lazy alternative to actually navigating. Of course it will be very situation dependent but I suspect this is very overused and likely not warranted.

With navigation and shipping a clear federal responsibility and @TransportCanada having a mandate for vessel safety, how can TC decide to ignore classes of vessels and their safety? TC should be hauled into court to explain why they allow this to happen.

Goes to show the difference between #CanadianNavy and @CoastGuardCAN communications. CCG has gone to the Arctic silently for decades and Navy makes a bit deal of seeing an iceberg. CCG is improving but still the "silent" federal service.

#Gibraltar gets bond for #oilspill cleanup, releases ship, but detains #shipmaster. Why is this tolerated? Ship master had a bunkering incident - this does not make them a criminal!
So sad! Never a ship that the CCG would have designed for their programs. Once again @CoastGuardCAN stuck with such ships. Legacy goes back to #Labrador #MaryHichens #TerryFox #MollyKool etc. CCG always makes them work but never optimal resources for what they do.

If we are going to have a common and equitable response to marine spills the terminal manager should be arrested. That was the response to a bunkering accident in Gibraltar, the ship master was arrested. Why just the seafarers?? #criminalization #seafarers

Oil spills being reported today in the USA and Gibraltar. The report from USA speaks to the unified command and measures being taken to respond. The Gibraltar report is that the ship master has been arrested! Why is this an acceptable response? #criminalizationofseafarers
