If psychiatric medications do not correct “imbalances” (or “dysfunctions”), how do they produce therapeutic effects? They can do so by producing effects that counter the processes that constitute, generate, or maintain psychiatric symptoms in simple or complex ways. (1/n)

The ideology that m.h. problems are caused by "trauma" & the ideology that they are caused by "chemical imbalance" have something else in common: They both locate the cause outside the person. They therefore share the same appeal: absolution from personal responsibility.

saw tweets from a psyD telling folks to not take meds for psychiatric disorders and...just want to say that my buspirone (anxiety) and desvenlafaxine (depression) are absolutely the reason I was able to make it through the last 3 years. Shoutout to meds that work 👍🏼

One of the addiction attending I work w says to pts: “I’m not sure what experiences you’ve had w treatment before but just so you know I’m not here to judge or shame you. I just want to help however I can.” It’s so nice & sadly necessary to say.
