NEW PAPER ALERT! How do caribou, moose, bears and wolves respond to seismic line restoration – a management tool being used to recover caribou habitat? Free for 50 days: authors.elsevier.com/a/1cgj31R%7EeL…
Curious about #caribou habitat #restoration? Why is it important? Can it work? Does it? Check out this RICC-sponsored webinar on Tuesday at 2:00pm MDT. Register by now here: cmu.abmi.ca/about/caribou-…. You can also watch past webinars from the Caribou Ecology and Recovery series.
In 2018, RICC initiated an extensive mapping exercise using provincially-available data to evaluate the recovery status of #SeismicLines in the entire RICC study area. This will be key for prioritizing #restoration. More here: bit.ly/2Or9Z0n
RICC-supported research has improved our understanding of #caribou and #moose responses to areas burned by #wildfire. Check out the #infographic below for our key findings, and visit our annual report to learn more: bit.ly/2Or9Z0n Full paper: doi.org/10.1139/cjz-20…
DYK we initiated a collaborative ecosystem monitoring #CameraTrap program in 2017? In collab w/ @ABbiodiversity, @YourAlberta, and @UAlberta, this program monitors changes in #wildlife relative density and activity levels. bit.ly/2Or9Z0n
The moose/fire project led by @ABbiodiversity used data from 112 moose fitted with GPS collars from three study areas: NE AB, NW Sask, and NE BC. The research focused on how moose respond to fires. bit.ly/2P4sCI0
We know caribou avoid burned areas, but are moose and deer attracted to burns? RICC commissioned a cursory study by @ABbiodiversity to examine how moose use burned areas in the northern boreal forest. bit.ly/2P4sCI0

In 2018, RICC initiated an extensive mapping exercise using provincially-available data to evaluate the recovery status of #SeismicLines in the entire RICC study area. This will be key for prioritizing #restoration. More here: bit.ly/2Or9Z0n

DYK that coarse woody debris (CWD) is a key restoration tool? CWD provides cover for new seedlings, helping them establish. As part of the @BeraProject, RICC-supported research by Gustavo Lopes-Queiroz @UCalgary is helping map CWD using aircraft imagery. doi.org/10.3390/f10060…

@Alberta_NWSAR is commencing a research project with @ABbiodiversity and @Albertatrappers with remote #CameraTraps and #ARUs in NW Alberta #watchthisspace
#WildlifeMonitoring is a key component of RICC projects. Remote #CameraTraps are one method we use to find out what species are using linear features, including caribou predators like this handsome wolf:
Another new paper! Linear features are implicated in #caribou declines. Habitat restoration is a tool we can (and have to!) use to begin to recover populations. But how might restoration affect caribou populations? Check out our simulations here: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…
With co authors @mspngnbrg and @TheoMichelot and data provided by @RICCCaribou
Thanks @kate_sciart and @FuseKnowledge for the infographic, and @RICCCaribou for the support! And of course, my co-authors, including @wild_move_eco
New Paper! We developed & used a conceptual framework to integrate selection and movement to understand habitat associations: results suggest predators use linear features as travel corridors, but prey perceive them as risky. Open Access soon so check back besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…
