Unlike 2D drawings 3D models cannot use lineart to help accentuating the shapes and create flows. Panels can be worked in to break up the uniformity. They catch lights and cast shadows and work almost like a lineart itself. Not realistic but so does giant mechs :p

@Rattapoom_K Well, they can though. There's a number of techniques, but the Toon shader is a prime example. I've also seen people model the lines directly into the model to retain the shader environment for other purposes. "Greebling" is, I think, what you're going for here.
