I was a school librarian for many years. Books are a very gentle, private way to learn hard lessons. I absolutely never recommend denying a child a book they can find and read without help. That said, I would never put this book in a child’s hands, but I would also never remove it if the child found the book on his or her own. And I would not refuse to answer questions if the child asked. Most schools have a procedure for removing books from the library. Parents should know the library and the librarian and should make visits. Growing up is hard enough without having strangers interfering with what other peoples’ kids can read or think about.
