1994: 43m South Africans. 20% unemployment rate. 8.6m unemployed. 2024: 60m South Africans. 33% unemployment rate. 19.8m unemployed. An increase of 11.2m people unemployed since apartheid ended. Tell me again how SA poverty is due to the legacy of apartheid. Poverty is all over the world and always due to bad policy, governance and demographics.
I see so many here arguing about the exploitation of black people by the previous NP Govt and all sorts of reason why the comparison is skewed. My take is a little one sided because I ignore the 1994 numbers and focus on the present numbers and I overlay them with a few additional challenges: - SA’s manufacturing ability - Trade schools - Sub standard education - Collapsing infrastructure (ports, rail & road) - Global competitiveness How on earth will a declining economy create jobs to accommodate these people. You have the likes of @ThuliMadonsela3 jumping for joy at the expansion of the social grant when it has to be abundantly clear that the grants are not sustainable, but an inclusive and prosperous economy is. Scary times indeed.
@botes63 Well said. The point of my tweet is for people to stop just blaming apartheid and start looking at the real causes of the decline from 94 to present. Like you have done.
