Rivers have ghosts, and they lie all around us in the land… This is one of the famous Fisk maps of the 1940s, showing the ghost-meanders of the Lower Mississippi. Alongside it are images of the beautiful recent re-meandering of a stretch of the River Stiffkey; exceptional work by @N_Rivers_Trust & Charles Rangeley-Wilson. The Stiffkey, imprisoned and straightened for at least seven centuries, has now been freed to wander over its floodplain again—and inhabit its former ghost. In case of interest I’ve written a longer exploration of meanders, river-ghosts and re-animation over on Instagram, also at @robgmacfarlane. Here: instagram.com/p/DBWDuq2IJtR/…
@RobGMacfarlane Interesting to see the English/Welsh border traced out as it is now and the current river Camlad channel, a reminder rivers are living things that have moved through the ages
@RobGMacfarlane I didn’t realise that rivers were being straightened that long ago - I assumed it was all done in the 18th/19th century
@RobGMacfarlane Thank you for this. What is the henge-like structure in the upper right quadrant (green color)?
@RobGMacfarlane We all had to draw meanders and ox-bow lakes. A schoolmate coloured the river green and the ground blue. Couldn't be persuaded.
@RobGMacfarlane They changed the course of the river which ran through the middle of the village where I work in Switzerland, and put the railway in its place. 😳
@RobGMacfarlane Many years ago, I went on a fabulous walking tour of the “lost rivers of London”. It was amazing how you could kind of see in the contours of the streets where they had been and are now piped through
@RobGMacfarlane This is usually a fabulous example of oxbow lakes in creation on the River Severn in Shropshire. I wonder how much it will meander in future.
@RobGMacfarlane Was there today. Egrets in the river.
@RobGMacfarlane @Bertrom The Stour at Kinver meanders. Really twisty twirly deep in parts shallow in others.
@RobGMacfarlane A map of the palaeochannel complex at the Trent/Derwent confluence in Derbyshire, enormously important locations for preservation of archaeological remains
@RobGMacfarlane I find these very beautiful - just been reading a piece you signposted about restoring the 'wiggle' in Cumbria. It's kind of magical 🐟🐠🌿
@RobGMacfarlane Oh, how beautiful! How *interesting*. This is what I love to see and learn about on social media.
@RobGMacfarlane This is great and I legitimately thought it was a @HooklandGuide post 🖤 from
@RobGMacfarlane Thanks for the information on Warham Camp. It's on my Norfolk trip list!
