Rewatch: Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories: The Mission. An ideally compressed unit, more memorable at 45 minutes than most features; punchline both an outrageous cheat and perfect; manages to be the seed for both Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan.
Rewatch: John Sturges's Jeopardy. Crackerjack little drama of race-against-time, what-would-you do quandary; Stanwyck peeling back the veneer of '50s wife to find the flapper cunning still alive and well; evil sexy Ralph Meeker saves the day.
To be just the tiniest bit fair to the Eyes Wide Shut conspiracy twits, according to Frederic Raphael even Kubrick was briefly taken in by the fictional background he penned for the orgiasts.
Viewing: Akiva Schaffer's The Naked Gun. Has moments, and a lot of ... not-moments. Best gags are all variations; the staging's often poor and most every element feels half-finished. Neeson okay, but lacks the Holy Fool quality Nielsen made his core weapon.
Rewatch: a distant historical fantasy of an age undreamed when plucky heroes brought down pompous tyrants, and they had the means and support to do it, and when shame and public spirit were still things. That's right, All The President's Men.
Rewatch: Kevin Connor's At The Earth's Core. Immensely charming slice of classic pulp mag-meets prog album cover and one that, for all its rubber monsters, is also almost perversely well-made.
Rewatch: John Sturges' The Magnificent Seven. Which, yeah, I know really ain't Seven Samurai, but if you can't enjoy this you probably need a personality transplant.
That deadpan fade-out at the very end of this is a true masterstroke. Technically it's a happy ending - Gondo's okay, the kid's fine, and the villain, a bottomless scumbag, is getting his comeuppance. And yet it manages to be the opposite of reassuring.

Aussie Top 10, April 1987. Fascinating how the sieve of pop culture time works. I heard one of these in the supermarket today - No 2, of course - whilst others have been erased like Stalin's Comintern rivals. No 10 band became The Wiggles.

Viewing: MJ Bassett's Red Sonja. Pure streaming cheese, confusingly told at points, but as with Bassett's Rogue there's a cumulative substance; looks goods, has fun with RS's familiar iconography. Matilda Lutz fine in lead, Wallis Day interesting.
Viewing: Shawn Simmons' Eenie Meanie. Seems at first like a straightforward, scuzz-accented riff on The Driver mini-genre, takes interesting swerves towards a darker character drama. Deserves better than streaming dump; Samara Weaving great lead.
