On this day in 1944, a 21-man OSS force led by Lt. Cmdr. Frank Wisner parachutes into Romania, coordinating the rescue operation of well over 1,000 American POWs. B-17 bombers will ferry the freed airmen back to US bases in Italy before they can fall into Soviet hands

As the 18th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, today we honor FDNY Fire Marshal Ronald Bucca, who was also a 29-year veteran of the U.S. Army. Bucca was one of 343 firemen that lost their lives that day. Son Ronald Jr. followed in his footsteps, also becoming a Green Beret.

On this day in 1961 East German troops close off the streets between Soviet and Western areas of Berlin. Crews begin tearing up the roads and installing barricades. Soon, concrete walls, guard towers, dogs, and anti-vehicular emplacements will surround the city - the Berlin Wall

On this day in 1944, LT Joseph P. Kennedy (yes, the older brother of Pres. John F. Kennedy) straps into a Navy Liberator bomber for a top-secret mission to target German submarine pens. However, his plane explodes before Kennedy and his copilot could jump, killing both crew.

Today would have been the 100th birthday of Yankee manager - and U.S. Army Major - Ralph Houk. When the US entered WWII, he enlisted in the Army, seeing combat during the Battle of the Bulge. He then returned to the diamond, leading the Yankees to two World Series championships.

On this day in 1918, 10 Allied divisions surprise and shatter the German line at Amiens, France, inflicting 30,000 casualties in just one day. 2 million Allied and German soldiers are killed, wounded, or captured in the Hundred Days Offensive, but the campaign ends WWI.
