Monk’s touch is unmistakable—playful, offbeat, yet always locked into the groove…
@SVG__Collection An example of Cubism in music form.
@SVG__Collection Of all the Monk documentaries I've seen, none of them answer the question of why his parents (or grandparents, since he's a Jr.) named him "Thelonious Sphere". There's probably an interesting story there, but I haven't heard it.
@SVG__Collection is it weird that I can listen to him and not think “OK, that’s weird”, but when I see him play, I feel like there’s a joke on us
@SVG__Collection I think what gives his music a distinctive sound is that he plays whole note scales
@SVG__Collection This is the kind of Jazz I just do not understand.
@SVG__Collection He takes some getting used to but once it clicks. I feel like he is a huge influence on the Free Jazz folks when it comes to that “crossing into the edge of chaos, but always resolving back into the groove.” Like a child you think is always going to fall, but finds balance.
@SVG__Collection Probably my favorite monk song open.spotify.com/track/4Us9BxXn…
@SVG__Collection To be inside his mind for those 3-4 minutes. To comprehend what notes and keys to hit next, to come up with that and to take the risks is remarkable. Obvious he is studied and a pro but he is willing to take the risks and be daring. Love it.
@SVG__Collection I always fondly think of this. “You’ve got to dig it to dig it, you dig?”
@SVG__Collection Dissonance never sounded so good! It's not just the sounds. He's visually entertaining with the body mechanics that syncs up with the playing.
@SVG__Collection : Thelonious Monk was epic! 🕯🕊🕯
@SVG__Collection The best combination of minimal orthodox technique with maximum musicality.
@SVG__Collection As someone that came from a rock / pop background Monk was a lightbulb moment for me - you mean we can play ‘those’ notes , chords and rhythms ? I love how he can also make them sound beautiful too . Monk opened up a whole new world for me .
@SVG__Collection When my daughter was single digits in age and learning piano she called Monk flat fingers.
@SVG__Collection You said it. This is a great clip to illustrate it too. It is possible to fall in love with his playing every single time you hear it.
@SVG__Collection He’s playing all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order.
@SVG__Collection How hard was it for his accompaniment to keep up or follow along?
@SVG__Collection Fingers never curled. Anybody else play in that manner?
@SVG__Collection Weird, my eyes first saw Musk. The.n I reread it
@SVG__Collection I was telling my homie I think I now know why jdilla somtimes called himself the THELONIOUS. I’m not sure, but I think it’s because him and monk had the same style ( off beat) and it worked perfect…..just a wild guess though!
@SVG__Collection He's operating in a space that most folks wouldn't even be able to perceive
@SVG__Collection It would 100% be tough to do but someone needs to make a Malik monk thelonious monk edit.
@SVG__Collection The loneliest Monk! my long time mentor my semitone harmonic my major seventh my unresolved cadence my Ruby my Dear!
