Just had some really good news!! After an absence of THREE YEARS, we have just been informed by our supplier that they now have new stock of Apache chilli. So we should have seed packs available for selling by next week!

Sown in early February, plants of both Hot Juan and Hot Juanita have now got red fruit on them, making these varieties this year's earliest maturing chlllies, and possibly the two earliest varieties we sell from our entire range.

We’ve just started to harvest the leafy sideshoots sprouting off the main stems of our Oldenburg Kale. The shoots were topped with tiny, unopened flower buds and measured about 10 to 20cm long. When cooked, they were tender and tasty – who needs purple sprouting broccoli?

Try using a heavy duty ice cream scoop to deseed pumpkins, marrows and winter squashes with large cavities. Our scoop came cheap at a charity shop, though different versions are readily available elsewhere. (The picture is of Crown Prince winter squash being deseeded)

It was our belief that New Zealand spinach was a tender vegetable that suffered from freezing temperatures. Plants in our nursery, however, have survived snow and a series of frosts, and we realise that it is hardier than we thought.

The fig leaf gourd (Cucurbita ficifolia) we grew for seed resisted the mildew that strenuously attacked our courgettes and winter squashes (C. pepo and maxima) last summer. Though tough enough to fend off mildew, the plants finally succumbed to the recent frosts.

Despite exposure to wind, frost, snow and blight, 3 varieties in our outdoor tomato trial (Crimson Crush, Toddler, and Consuelo – all blight resistant) still had some green leaves and red fruit left on them on 1 December. The fruit were quite edible, albeit not at their best.

Our Fig Leaf Gourds are still looking pretty good. We harvested all our winter squashes weeks ago, but we think we'll leave these until their leaves have died off.

After pinching out and training our tomatoes every week I completely stopped in early September, but they continued growing! They now look awful, but are still producing masses of fruit. Perhaps next year I'll keep up the pruning into the autumn.

This year our courgette plants did pretty well, producing masses of courgettes. But then they got powdery mildew and were dead by September... well, obviously one plant wasn't quite dead, and this good weather has perked it up, and we have courgettes to pick – in October! Wow!

This is Gourmet, a sweet pepper that starts green, and ripens to this lovely orange. We've been selling seed of this variety for years; so this year we grew it out – we like to remind us what the varieties we sell are like. I see now why we liked Gourmet. It has been brillliant.

Oh right, thanks for the tip. We should trial Losetto. In fact, next year we are planning on doing a blight resistance trial for bush tomatoes, so will include Losetto.

So the greenhouse is ready for our germination trials. Every autumn we test the germination of every line of every variety we have in stock. This gives us confidence that the seed we sell is good and should produce good germination for all gardeners.
