📢New research from #ShellFoundation: Exploring the potential of under-researched productive uses of energy ⚡! Shell Foundation commissioned research from The Future of Energy, co-funded with UK aid from the UK government’s @TEAEnergyAccess, to explore the complex landscape of Productive Uses of Energy (#PUE) solutions. The research highlights 10 less-documented PUE applications that are transforming the livelihoods of micro-entrepreneurs in #India, #Kenya, and #Nigeria. Some of the PUE applications studied are: cooling (refrigeration and freezing), retail food and beverage preparation (cooking and juicing), textiles, ICT and hairdressing. The research found that the impact on customers who used PUE include: 📈80% of PUE users reported an increase in their incomes 📈$57 monthly income increase for solar-powered refrigerator users in India 📈25% income increase for cold room customers in Kenya The research also highlighted some challenges and solutions, including: 🔹Market fragmentation 🔹Funding mismatches 🔹High upfront costs 🔹Detrimental importation regulations 🔹Limited consumer awareness 🔹Gender-specific barriers Our research offers practical resolutions to these challenges, including tailored financing models, enhanced last-mile connectivity, and targeted gender support.
