That is remarkable, considering, that we expect a new house today to have better (more) insulation, more wiring (power and Cat 7 for network), more appliances, and more security than in the late 70s.

Well, actually you have 50 - 60 years to invest. Unless you want to die at 60 years. Never forget, even “retired” people need to grow their nest-egg by investing.

ZERO, Never had any. Government paid for University, parents paid for living expenses. I started a job on the side and paid for my extras (car, motor cycle) and lived a frugal life. I know I am lucky to have a generous government and even more generous parents.

First, max out your 401(k), especially if your employer matches —> Free money. Second, send your paycheck to an investment account and take out every $2,000 for living expenses as a separate transaction and only when you need to.
