@AbbyTeachesDSM @ReadSimplified Is this "knowledge based" curriculum? What is your text-book called? I think I listened to a podcast about it. I can definitely see WHY this helps students become good writers- their writing is based on the content that they are learning.

@ReadSimplified Yes! So proud of how far they’ve come! We have a personal narrative journal that we do each month. I was looking at them the other day after we wrote our April entry and had some happy tears. First grade growth is incredible, truly. 🩷🩷🩷

Misconception #3: The “5 pillars” (PA, phonics, fluency, vocab & comp) = SoR. These ‘pillars’ were identified in the NRP report 23 years ago. Since then we know that oral lang and background knowledge play a HUGE role in reading proficiency. We should now call it the “Big 7.”

For my entire educational career I've listened to these "debates" about teaching and without fail my perspective is almost always "why are we making this either/or"
@SoRclassroom I wonder how many times I read "crossed their rubicon" in Wall Street Journal or other editorials and articles, before I finally looked it up to learn who did that first, and where. I'll bet I was approaching age thirty. 😐
@tetheredtoed1 I am not trying to denigrate the method by telling the truth of its origin. Today, I prefer Explicit Instruction over DI. DI is very programmatic and I don’t think it is necessary for most students.
