It’s that time of the summer where you start focusing on planning and prepping. To support your work I’ve shared my first scheme of work on TES resources. This unit teaches year 7 students how to evaluate live theatre. tes.com/teaching-resou…
Finding low level, off task behaviour frustrating…? ‘When… and then…’ language re-engage students and establish authority, suggesting you assume the class will do the right thing. Usually, they do.
We have 50 minute lessons at my school- learning time is precious. I work hard to tighten transitions in different ways. I make countdowns competitive and praise those who are doing what I want before they realise they’ve done it.
What do you do to maintain pace?
How I get the attention of my class. Countdowns to quiet, Clap a rhythm, clap it back, hands up, clap once if you can hear me, clap twice if you can hear me, jazz hands. Set these up in the first weeks of the new year, lay out your expectations for the students early.
I'm attending Music & Drama Education Expo 2024 on 22 - 23 February 2024 at Business Design Centre, London.

Love this- we are approaching this idea through the language of ‘wondering’ - getting students to engage with images, text, quotes, topics through bell work that encourages them to explore their own response and to think freely.

Establishing the basics is vital- never underestimate the power of transitions between activities. Stagger chair stacking, picking up white boards etc. Practise your instructions to these moments to allow for smooth organised changes. Support the flow of learning for all.
Consider your circle seats and groupings like seating plans. As a solo drama teacher I work with ALL students in KS3. That’s a lot of names and learners- plan your circle seats to allow for targeted pair work, to manage behaviour, engagement and to stretch and challenge.
New to a school? Top tip- identify routines used in other areas of the school and adopt them for your classroom. We use mini whiteboard starters and retrieval based bell work to establish that the drama classroom has equal weight to other lessons. Maintain routines like these.
These tips really resonate with the way I work. My current school puts techniques like these at the forefront of their work with young people. We work upstream to empower students and staff to work together towards achieving their potential.
