According to the gas station trade group, it takes an average of 4.5 minutes to fill up and pay for a tank of gas. That's excluding the drive. Assuming one tank per week over three years of ownership, that's 11.7 hours saved simply by owning a Tesla EV with home charging.
@TechOperator Why three years? Why not just tell us the one year number?
When people ask “how long does it take to charge?” I always tell them “15 seconds”. That’s the time it takes me to plug the car in and leave it. Gotta love having a gas station in your garage!!
There was a market researcher on @Autoline Afterhours last year whose data show that people spend way more time at gas stations that they think. I think it was something more like 11 -17 minutes on average. Sure some people pump and go, but if anybody is really being honest with themselves, they will admit that (especially on a road trip) you get out, stretch your legs, use the restroom, load up on snack, maybe make a phone call and check emails, etc.
@TechOperator Or your Air BNB owner charges you up for free.
@TechOperator That’s also assuming you get right to a pump. Pull up to a Costco (for .10 cheaper) and the wait is another 15 minutes.
@TechOperator Hey I'm 99.7% in this camp... but then there's road trips
@TechOperator It’s a non subject to me Tesla cars have superior technology and are solid and reliable FSD is indispensable for me so I won’t consider anything but a Tesla
And the reality is that if one has to get gas before an appointment one allows more than 5 minutes. I’ve heard the number is about 8 minutes. Another factor is that you can’t leave your car at the pump for a meal so the pumping time adds to meal time, instead of being concurrent with charging. Also there is more necessary exterior activity for pumping so that affects personal safety and comfort.
@TechOperator As I constantly repeat, charging and range are primarily psychology problems not technology problems.
@TechOperator I don’t have home charging but I still safe a lot of time. Right now I’m heading to a park with public chargers. I’ll have a stroll with my son while my car is charging. And nobody minds some chargers next to a park, but I wouldn’t want a gas station there.
@TechOperator 12 hours over three years is noise-level. It's negligible in the grand scope of life. The major benefit is the simple lack of bother for those with home chargers. Apartment dwellers and street parkers will continue to pump at stations, whether it be hydrocarbons or electrons.
@TechOperator I have been looking into a model Y and I have been reading for optimal battery health/life that you should keep it charged between 20% - 60%, thoughts or do you always fuel up to 100%?
Convenience is the big plus. Being full up every morning is the absolute berries. Many gas stations are sketchy places. Keep your head on a swivel and be sure to check for a card skimmer. Hopefully no gas smell on your hand. Do you make a special trip to fill up or do you allow extra time going to work or getting home?
@TechOperator That doesn't include payment or getting a drink. The average time taken for the complete stop is two or three times longer--minimum.
@TechOperator Charge while you sleep is the best!
@TechOperator It funny how many people try to rag on EVs like they understand. But what they tend to forget is all EV owners came from ICE.
