Here's the first one, anyway... You can renew a passport online with a digital photograph. Takes about 30minutes - so much better than standing in the queue at the Post Office.

So if your prints don't look perfect first time, try not to despair. Start with a small model that prints quickly and examine the flaws. Tweak GCode and printer settings, one at a time to see whether it makes things better or worse, then make a note of the changes.

You might think that all PLA filament behaves the same. Sadly not. Different manufacturers' filament and even different colours have slightly different properties. This means that settings on printers often need to be tweaked to get the prints right.

When we want to repeatedly print the same object, we need to optimise the GCode for the object to balance speed, quality and consistency. For our print farm the initial optimisation took a couple of days. Now we're still tweaking and testing but we've got some good stable code.

Slicing software makes a file of instructions - usually called GCode - to guide the printer. The GCode is different for different printers, and is tuned for the various materials, nozzle size and other settings.

Slicing is how you get from a 3D model to a set of instructions to guide the motors on the printer to draw your object in a series of layers. We use slicing software called CURA and it allows you to fine tune lots of parameters to optimise your print

Once you've chosen your material, you need to make your model. You can download from the internet or design your own. Most 3D printers come with some samples to try. But you can't just download a model and "press print" ...you need to get familiar with "slicing"

Other printing materials tend to be used for more special applications. If you're printing working parts its worth checking out the properties of the various materials to find the most appropriate one. Bear in mind, though, some of the more exotic filament need special settings.

Is all 3D filament made of the same material? No. The most commonly used is a plastic made from plant-based oils. Known as Polylcatic Acid - or PLA, it's the best starting material in your 3D printing journey. Widely available and a good balance of printability and stablilty.

First - a bit of terminology. The 3D printers that are being used for printing face shield headbands are usually "Fused Deposition Modelling" or "Fused Filament Fabrication". The material is heated to melting point and deposited in layers to make the object.

So you need to actively edit a shared document on the fly. Source/version control is less important than real-time collaboration. GoogleDocs does this pretty efficiently.
