With the Walker Cup starting at Cypress Point tomorrow, we’re looking back to 1930, when the US side played the New Course at The Addington before heading to Royal St George’s. Middle of the photo is 5 time Walker Cupper Bobby Jones, about to start his legendary Slam.

Work is nearly finished on naturalising the third tee. The old box sat awkwardly into the slope and has been removed. Now, the area is reshaped to create a smoother transition from the second green.

Changes to 16 may look dramatic, but we're lucky to restore a layout that’s barely been touched since it was built. Thanks to the Bennett family, who resisted change for half a century; growth crept in, but beneath it all is one of the best-preserved Golden Age courses anywhere.

The team has been hard at work renovating the new third tees, designed to flow naturally into the surrounds of the second green and offer a range of options for this uphill hole that can now play between 150 and 255 yards.

After a stop at the Hut, the restored 11th awaits. A new runoff replaces the right-hand bunker, the green’s been expanded for bolder pins, and the back-right horseshoe bunker is back. Soon, an alternate tee will offer a fresh angle into this endlessly interesting short hole.

Our opener was not meant to be the 1st. Rationing after WW1 stopped the clubhouse from being built in its desired location, up the hill, to the right of the (now) fifth tee. It will eventually return to its original spot as the 15th, when we rebuild the clubhouse atop the hill.

“With the exception of the 5th at Pine Valley, the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf.” – Henry Longhurst The much-improved 13th is unrecognisable from eight years ago. While work to restore its original design is ongoing, it remains a truly great half-par hole.

The 14th green with London’s skyline in the distance. The fairway here will soon hug the tree line, which covers a cliff-like drop, allowing players to chase the preferred angle up the left and flirt with a hazard that has been hidden for generations.

The current fifth – soon to be the first when we switch back to the originally planned layout by Abercromby & Colt – features a vast, bumpy fairway that offers players the option to chase angles off the tee or provides ample room for the first swing of the day.

Improved playing corridors have allowed the course to come alive with colour in summer. Firm, green fairways are bordered by brown native areas, with purple heather soon to bloom as well.
