🚨 The Australian Government is delaying crucial environmental & biodiversity protection reforms. As well as failing to protect ecosystems and species at risk, it's likely to allow over 30 new fossil fuel projects to be approved under existing, broken laws. Thread 🧵 #auspol
Delaying the EPBC reforms conveniently allows business as usual. This Govt has already approved 4 coal mines since May 2022. With the 25 coal mines pending approval, that's over 12 bn tonnes of potential emissions. Add your name: theaus.in/stopcoalmines
The Govt could show it is serious about preventing ecosystem collapse & species extinction by fixing the EPBC Act. It could show it is serious about preventing dangerous climate change by not approving new fossil fuel projects, which could be done *without* EPBC reforms. #auspol
The Environment Minister said in 2022: “I will not shy away from difficult problems or accept environmental decline & extinction as inevitable.” Sadly, rhetoric has not yet matched reality.
@TheAusInstitute @ProfTerryHughes What is preventing the government from doing this?
@TheAusInstitute @GrogsGamut Suspect it is a testing of the temperature reaction- in the structure of the national EPA and the reaction to being seen as “ too slow “ - as they say in the classics …… it’s coming
