@hecubian_devil It's the same in the Middle East. People can be victims of imperialism and war but also harbour ill-intent against others. The homophobia is not light. You will get killed/beaten/socially outcast. This pretence that the non-West can't have faults. It's just not true.

Perhaps the superficial, opportunistic rhetoric from politicians like Traoré linking the two is because homophobic states have pretty consistently painted homosexuality as a corrupting influence foisted on society by some foreign or infiltrating element

If homophobia in the colonial periphery is purely a reflexive, misguided response to imperialism, then why weren’t independence struggles linked to the repeal of British anti-sodomy laws? Why wasn’t queerness seen as anti-imperial when the West was more openly homophobic?

It’s very simple to evaluate this—look at independence struggles against British colonialism around the world. These generally took place at times when Britain was, effectively, the world’s premier homophobic empire. Was there an anti-imperial *pro gay* turn? No? Hm! Interesting

That’s what homophobia is. It’s when you think gay people are disgusting. Homophobes in the global south are not led to homophobia because they’re just trying to do Maoism and have made an innocent, childlike error. That is weird, and infantilizing, and dehumanizing.
