Time for #DevDiscuss Tonight's topic is career paths Let's start with questions... - What do they not tell new devs about coding career paths? - How often do you think about your career path? - How do you feel about titles? Have your thoughts on this subject ever changed?
@ThePracticalDev My feelings on job titles have changed a lot over time. In the beginning, it was a good thing since titles were clear about the responsibilities and skills I'd be doing. Now I'm less concerned about the titles and concentrate more on the skills since titles vary #DevDiscuss
@ThePracticalDev There are many career paths for a dev that DON'T lead to being a manager. There are NO career paths for a dev that don't involve dealing with people. As you grow in your career, people skills are important; whether you are a staff engg, dev rel or dev manager. #DevDiscuss
@ThePracticalDev It is hard telling people about coding career paths since there's not a clear path to getting to a certain career. Plus coding itself is constantly changing so people can hesitate telling people about paths since the paths itself always change. #DevDiscuss
@ThePracticalDev They don't tell new developers to exercise, eat, and sleep well. Doing it or not will be important in 10 years
@ThePracticalDev I'm always thinking about my career path. I'm always thinking about what I'm doing and if that is keeping me on the right path. Then I'm looking for ways and resources that can help me along my career path so I get to where I want to go. #DevDiscuss
@ThePracticalDev Starting to think about my carrer path more recently as it starting feel/look more and more like a treadmill of "2 years then laid-off" doing the same thing without measurable advancement. Starting to understand I might need to do something else cause what I'm doing isnt working
@ThePracticalDev The bigger your title, the further away from the code you'll get...
@ThePracticalDev I used to think in terms of roles and titles, but I switched to thinking about tasks, skills and needs. It lets us accomplish goals and getting things done more efficiently, and we've become a better team
@ThePracticalDev It's almost certain you will sooner change the job than get promoted or make any change internally. Titles are unfair, unless you consider that the major driver is years of experience - just like title names jr/sr suggest.
@ThePracticalDev Gonna watch this because I probably want to work in software dev someday
