The 77th World Health Assembly (#WHA77) will take place in Geneva, on 27 May-1 June 2024 with a special focus on Non-Communicable Diseases (#NCDs). The event aims to gather esteemed leaders, and advocates to discuss strategies to accelerate progress on #prevention and care. #ITAW
✨Peter Lakwijk, Treasurer and Board Member at TFI, will deliver a lecture in Stockholm, on May 12, at the European Congress of Endocrinology (#ECE), one of the largest #endocrine events in Europe. Peter's talk, entitled: "THYROID DISEASES ARE NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES (NCDs)".

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (#EDCs) are substances that mimic, block, or interfere with hormones in the body’s #endocrine system, significantly contributing to disease. It is important to limit exposure to EDCs that are found in plastic bottles, food additives, some cosmetics.

Thyroid diseases are complex conditions and command more #awareness. The Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Alliance policy brief on #thyroid disorders shows that there are barriers in terms of #NCDs outside the ‘5×5’ approach: lack of awareness, disease #prevention, and #testing.
In children and adolescents, consequences of undertreatment or no #treatment of #hypothyroidism in children are poor growth and development, poor performance at school. These may be reversible in children and adolescents if hypothyroidism is treated early with #levothyroxine.
Did you know that if thyroid hormones are even slightly reduced, symptoms may occur from all organs in the body? The risks of under-treatment of #hypothyroidism are poor #mental function, symptoms of ADHD, reduced #cardiac output, decreased physical capacity, #muscle weakness.
It is important to highlight the necessity to acknowledge #thyroid #diseases as Non-Communicable Diseases (#NCDs) and advocate that people at risk of NCDs, including #endocrine-related conditions, would receive timely #diagnosis. #ITAW #endocrinology
Recognizing #thyroid diseases as important #NCDs would ensure inclusion of thyroid disorders in policy agendas, increased awareness to prevent complications, more equitable access to #screening, and timely #diagnosis and care. Let's make sure no thyroid #patient is left behind.
