Floss silk trees are in bloom around San Diego County. Many of the big, beautiful flowers become large, green fruit, about 5X the size of an avocado. When fruit cracks open later, balls of silk that give the tree its name emerge. They’re native to Australia & New Guinea. #trees

The vast majority of the year, the silk floss tree (Ceiba speciosa) provides no hints why it bears its name. Huge, green seed pods that resemble grenades hang from the tree for months. When the pods crack open, the silk floss, once used in life preservers, emerges. #trees
