The most important number there is the 62 percent - a year BEFORE the pandemic. So the idea that people just stopped trusting institutions because of how some handled Covid simply isn't true.

Something philosophy students learn, but that doesn't shake them enough, is that Aristotle thinks his teaching can only properly affect those with a certain background.
I mean, if you're the student, why are you so sure the book is even *for you*? (1)
Teaching an Aristotelian ethics seminar this term, starting with Nicomachean Ethics Book I. It's just such a great text for many students. It's got the big "what's the purpose of life?" question at its core, but also dense and rich argumentation. Philosophy! (1)
Did you guys see the thing about how using AI in medical practice for a short period of time is correlated with doctors becoming much worse at the same tasks unassisted. Like it obliterated decades of practice and expertise.
Staff writer and former assistant professor @Tyler_A_Harper used to put "Melancholia" on his course’s syllabus. “One student raised his hand and demanded: ‘Why did you make us watch that?’” he writes in The Atlantic Daily. theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar…
I answered questions about things I like (e.g. the late rapper Ka and his perfect album “Honor Killed the Samurai,” Hemingway’s early journalism, and Monte Burke’s fishing writing) and things I don’t like (e.g. ubiquitous legal weed, state-sanctioned euthanasia, art galleries).

There is no way to fix this without changing the current incentive structures on both sides. Faculty get destroyed on evals if they give accurate grades. Students are incentivized to care about grades above all else.
What we'd need to fix this is a total overhaul the system.

On thing I don’t like about the generalized push to be more “encouraging” and “supportive” of students is that this usually is code for being kind of sweet. And that’s not what every student needs.

I wrote about the perverse consequences of grade inflation. Between 1985 and 2021, the share of Harvard grades in the A range more than doubled, from 33% to 79%. But students are more miserable—and doing less schoolwork—than ever:
The University of Chicago recently announced pauses on admissions to some of its humanities doctoral programs. @Tyler_A_Harper argues that it's “a particular gut-punch to the humanities, not just at the university itself, but nationally and even globally.” theatlantic.com/culture/archiv…
A strange brew of shock, confusion, and ambivalence is the defining emotion of the generative-AI era, Charlie Warzel argues. “It seems that one of AI’s enduring cultural impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.” theatln.tc/A54jcadO
