Kinders are communicating designs through labeled blueprints & investigating math concepts of longer, shorter, and equality- while collaborating to build a sturdy, just-right chair for "Goldilocks." These faces tell you everything you need to know about STEAM-powered learning!
Our 6th graders have been learning to code using drag-and-drop Javascript so they can create apps to help other students learn or study. Our beta tests are looking great!
5th graders are designing an anemometer from inexpensive materials. We love iterative design! Can you spot the lessons they learned between versions 1, 2, and 3 (look closely at the spoons)? Now onto calibration (we love math too)!
What's better than the 100th day of school in Kindergarten? Getting to spend it building and testing a wind-powered flotation device!
Our fifth graders have been exploring Scratch and LEGO robots to create music machines and we learn about both sound and physical computing.
Our Kindergartners have been investigating how architects combine different shapes along with materials that are longer, shorter, and the same size to design new buildings. Check out their awesome models for beach houses that will stay safe if there is a flood!

A CS Ed Week peek into STEAM Lab- 3rd graders have been working for months to learn about pollination and colony collapse disorder, and to develop a concept for a new type of flower to support honeybee populations. They are now expressing their ideas through code using Scratch.
Our 1st graders are investigating animal adaptations as they test different shapes of "bird beaks" to see how effective they are at collecting different types of food. Next they'll use this information to design a prosthetic bird beak- thanks to an awesome @FCPSSTEAM lesson!
WSES is growing and our 1st graders are taking on the challenge of designing additional playground equipment that students in all grades will enjoy!
Our sixth graders have been conducting experiments to test how individual variables affect parachute design. Members of each design team are becoming experts in one aspect of parachute design and will bring their knowledge back to their team as they develop the perfect parachute!
2nd graders working on designing a zipline that can eject a "bunny" into Mr. McGreely's fortified garden. Check out a couple of our interesting ideas! You can see the Engineering Design Process in action as one group goes through multiple iterations until they perfect it.
Our Kindergartners have been learning how to use materials in the STEAM Lab and all about the engineering design process by designing a backscratcher to help the Big, Smelly Bear finally reach that itch!

In the STEAM Lab, our second graders have used what they are learning about magnets to design a magnet-powered model for a pumpkin mover. Check out some of the creative designs they came up with!
Love our build days! Sixth grade students are creating models of resorts on other planets based on their research. They have chosen everything from cardboard to Lego to 3D printing for their prototypes.
