Without a dedicated approach, loneliness will keep being addressed indirectly — and the chance for pharmacists to be a frontline force against it will be lost. It’s time to give them the tools & backing they need. #Pharmacy #Loneliness #NHS #HealthPolicy #CommunityCare 7/
That’s why we need a standalone national strategy on loneliness to: 🔬 Invest in research 🗂️ Coordinate action across govt & public services 🛠️ Equip pharmacists with the training and tools they need to identify and support patients 6/
⚠️ The challenge: We still lack evidence on the root causes of loneliness & the best ways to prevent it. Pharmacists can’t act on what we don’t know — they need research, tools, training & clear referral pathways. 5/
Pharmacists are in a unique position to identify & tackle loneliness: 🤝 They are trusted by their communities 💬 They have personal relationships with patients 📍 They can connect people to local support 4/
Pharmacies will be central to this shift. Earlier this year the government proposed: ✂️ Cutting red tape to free up pharmacists’ time 🩺 Letting them diagnose & treat more conditions 🚪 Bringing more frontline care to the high street 3/
The NHS is under enormous strain. 🏥 Hospitals are oversubscribed. 🩺 GPs are stretched thin The 10-Year Health Plan aims to move more care into the community - making services more accessible, personalised & less complex to navigate 2/
💊 Phamarcists could be a powerful force in tackling loneliness 👥 They see patients more often than most healthcare professionals & are trusted in their communities. But without a dedicated national strategy on loneliness, we're not unlocking their full potential. 🧵
