The transition to wealth management was rough…
I registered for my CFP in June 2022 and knew I would jump to servicing individuals within a year. Little did I know that I would get to travel to 20 countries and live one of the best years of my life in between; that's another story ;).
I was looking to either A) work for an established advisor, B) buy a small book of business over time or C) start a business from scratch.
I interviewed 25 different teams, and 95% of the teams are stock pickers trying to predict which stocks will outperform with little to no consideration for financial planning, asset allocation, risk/return, and portfolio construction.
I still have yet to meet a portfolio manager who underperformed their benchmark. Every active manager claims to be skilled, of course! These wealth management teams manage multi-million dollar accounts for individuals, corporations, charities, and foundations. Option A was out.
Option B didn't present itself, mainly because the investment methodology didn't align. I met with this advisor who wanted to sell his book and was looking for a young guy who would take care of his clients like he did… by swing trading mutual funds.
I had to make him repeat his investment strategy about five times to ensure I understood what he was doing. I asked if he heard about the ETF market and left it there.
So I was left to Option C) start a business from scratch. After a rough seven months, I finally found my footing with Millen Wealth Advisors alongside Samuel Lichtman and Munish Mehan CFP® C.L.U® B-Tech.
