BREAKING: Scottish First Minister @HumzaYousaf has just announced that "over the next five years, we will more than double our investment in Scotland's arts and culture". It follows two major interventions by the Campaign for the Arts against cuts to Creative Scotland this year.
This commitment is hugely significant. It marks a change of direction after years of real-terms cuts and a further £6.6m cut this year. It recognises that culture counts, and benefits everybody. It is a direct result of thousands of people speaking up for the arts in Scotland.
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf Essential! Well done for the campaigning!
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf It's a promising development, but let's not forget how quickly our government ditched a promise not to cut this year's funding to Creative Scotland. That is to say I'll believe it when I see it.
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf If this plays out it’s a fantastic outcome & due acknowledgment of the crucial qualities of the arts - as money-spinners, mental health aids, and harbingers of joy
@_CFTA @skylinefilmtv @HumzaYousaf Great news. Looking forward to seeing what will go to Literature, perennial poor relations… and especially to publishing.
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf “Over the next five years, we will more than double our investment in Scotland’s arts and culture.” Hmmm, re-read a few times, start scribbling then ask for details. Who will get the investment? Is it new arts money or redirected? How will it be administered? Who decides? 🤔🤔🤔
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf Great news and well done campaign. We can do so much to make Scotland a fabulous country with such a strong culture scene!
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf Is that double this year's recently drastically cut back figure, or double this year's figure before it was cut back?!
@_CFTA @HumzaYousaf Does it mean years and years of funding Scottish feminist theatre companies yet giving nowt to theatre companies like 11:87 trying to give a voice to men and boys is over?
