The DLC-reliant design/rebalance philosophy has been a catastrophe for the genre. Cultivating a player base that whines for a patch every three months is not only not a good thing, but actively sucks for deeper and cooler explorations into existing metas.

I've not watched Squid Game, but I imagine it came about after a group of TV execs high on ground petrified octopus brain did a Takeshi Kitano watch marathon and Battle Royale directly followed Takeshi's Castle.
