Like many Black property owners in Chicago, all of Hansberry’s buildings were eventually appropriated through eminent domain during the urban renewal and highway projects of the 1950s and 60s. His buildings where located in Bronzeville, known as the prosperous “Black Metropolis."

Aerial footage of Overtown, Miami before and after much of the neighborhood was bulldozed for the construction of I-95 in the 60s. Over 12,000 residents of the neighborhood were displaced for the highway, along with thousands more in subsequent "urban renewal" projects.
