Previously, I was always discharged from hospital onto CPA - I needed & valued the intensive care coordination, a robust care plan & clear crisis/relapse plan, & regular reviews. It got my life back on track. Now, I've had nothing. RIP CPA = the end of real support for SMI.

"We were given leaflets about the ‘sensors’ after this meeting, which included a photo of what staff would be able to see; a clear CCTV image of a patient in their bedroom, clear enough to see the pattern on their clothes, their facial expression. All patients were very upset" 😖

All MH professionals should read this, and have a strong word with themselves as soon as they start to feel defensive. This is real, this is happening to some degree in every service, and we turn a blind eye because a discharge or 'gatekeeping' is supposedly a success

Such an important thread by an incredibly well informed (both medical & law) @DrChloeBeale. I struggled w colleagues who wouldn't speak up. It needs a critical mass to deconstruct such exclusive services. Gatekeeping, box ticking, self serving & not patient serving. Unacceptable.

Bipolar disorder has a suicide rate as high as 20%. That is quite a high death toll for ‘mood swings’, right? It runs in families, and many parents and siblings not only suffer from bipolar, but are simultaneously trying to help their loved ones deal with it. 4/

I doubt that anyone who denies bipolar exists, or who describes it as ‘mood swings’ has ever had to face the devastation that this severe condition can cause. It is a illness with a high genetic load, so it can occur in the absence of trauma, with no psychosocial triggers. 2/

I'm all for reducing coercive practice but this trend in mental health services to place all responsibility on patients is dangerous and heartless. Expecting people who are scared, ambivalent, or just too unwell to know they are unwell to not only advocate for their own care 1/8

Having bipolar “mood swings” is not a “coping mechanism”. You learn coping mechanisms. I did not “learn” depression or hypomania as a way of escaping from trauma. They are things that happen to me, not things I “do”.
