Daily reminder that cell data providers prioritize traffic to speedtest[.]net and there's absolutely nothing stopping you from registering a VPS you own to the pool of speedtest servers and also running a VPN on it, allowing you to bypass throttling and often have 0GB plan usage.
The way they forge their stats and shaped their traffic has changed over time, but the lie is the same. vice.com/en/article/pgk… adriano.fyi/posts/2023/202… variety.com/2016/digital/n…
@_mattata not immediately clear to me how you can arbitrarily choose a VPS that would fall within their filtering rules
@_mattata This is dumb if you have to pay egress. Also your bw is gonna get pounded with testing, also dumb.
@_mattata At college, I found that the classrooms had faster internet than the dorms, but the connection from the dorms to the classrooms wasn't throttled, so I just tunneled all my internet traffic through an SSH connection to a classroom pc.
@_mattata Yes, but expect to get 300Mbit/sec of traffic to that VPS (average continuous usage) and plan your AWS mortgage accordingly!
@_mattata actually there is something stopping me, i have no clue wtf any of that shit is or how to do it
@_mattata No way Ookla is going to just approve your VPS speedtest server if you don't meet technical criteria (specifically bandwidth) and uniqueness (aka having your own network).
@_mattata That makes all kind of sense. But I mostly use it to test that my wireless signal is good. Idk most of the time about throttling. My plan is already throttled by default.
@_mattata Brilliant. I wonder if that really is zero rated traffic?
@_mattata Did not know this. Definitely going to look into this.
@_mattata Oh, great! Another "genius" hack for bypassing data restrictions! 🙄 Just what we need—more ways to exploit the system and potentially cause network congestion. It's not a responsible or ethical approach. Respect data limits and play by the rules! #NoToBypassing
@_mattata interesting how would one hypothetically do this?
@_mattata How does it cause 0GB plan usage? Wouldn’t the VPN data go through the ISP (encrypted) allowing them to see the volume but not the true destination?
@_mattata Wow! That's a great way to turn the scam back around on them 😍
@_mattata This is a misconception that VPN will allow you to bypass DPI/BW shaping systems
@_mattata That's a nice idea but, then if my server get picked up to a test, them I must pay traffic on my VPS provider... There is no free lunch
@_mattata This is also with ISP's they commonly don't throttle your internet connection when you try to run a speedtest
