Don't 'go with the flow' in an interview
Do your research and narrow down your focus so you can structure your episode around a few set ideas
Trying to reach everybody ends up reaching nobody
Your episodes should be as long as they need to be but in general...
Solo episodes: 15-20mins long
Interviews: 45mins long
The most important thing is to keep your episodes roughly the same length each week for consistency
Ask your listeners to leave a 5-star review or comment on how they discovered your podcast
It’s a really helpful way of finding out which of your marketing channels are working
The room you record in is just as important as the microphone🎤
Avoid hard surfaces: empty rooms, fans, hard flooring, high ceilings, large rooms, windows
Go for soft surfaces: beds, blankets, carpets, curtains, pillows, rugs, small rooms, sofas
Meeting listener expectations🤝
Think of the title of your episode as a promise. You should start fulfilling that promise as soon as possible
Make sure to at least address the title of your episode within the first 30secs, or you risk losing trust and ears
If you're introducing a guest
Don’t read out what’s essentially their CV & a list of accomplishments
While it's important to provide some context for credibility, focus more on telling your listeners what information, value and learnings they’re going to gain from the guest
Instead of pulling one clip to start your episode with
Merge 3-4 clips together to form a mini trailer that lays out the most intriguing parts of the episode
One clip without context isn't very compelling, but merging a few clips together gives a clear tease of what's to come
Receive voice messages from your podcast listeners🎤
Via:
speakpipe.comtelbee.io
Or direct email
You could play these out on your show
Ask for feedback, a question, how they found you, what they've gained from listening, run a competition, etc
It's hard to frame an interview that goes with the flow & tries to cover a wide range of topics
Research your guest and narrow down what you want to speak about. Then you can package your episode around a few set ideas instead of trying to cover everything for everyone
There's no real need to write the word 'podcast' at the end of your show's name
It's a bit like writing 'TV' at the end of a television show or 'music' at the end of an album title
How to never run out of content ideas💡
Find active communities related to your industry in places like reddit, facebook groups, discord servers, etc
Base your content around answering the questions, addressing pain points & discussing the topics people bring up in these places
You don't have to cut down every pause in your podcast episode
Some AI tools allow you to shorten word gaps down to a second, which is wild to me
Let things breathe
Think about the listener. Give them time to digest what's been said and space to have their own thoughts
❎ Bad podcast episode title: #012 Interview With Business Leader Joe Bloggs
✅ Good podcast episode title: How To Build A Business With A Heart & What You Should NEVER Say To An Employee
Same episode but pulling out the value in the show
Don't market your podcast episode by telling us about the guest on your show (unless they're well known in your industry)
Market your episode by telling us the value we'll gain from listening
Sell the information and learnings, not the guest
