181 homes and only 17 are affordable. This is absolute fucking bullshit.

Market rate housing is affordable housing even if you personally can’t afford it. Don’t build new housing and the people who would otherwise buy/rent those new units will simply buy/rent in the existing housing stock at a rate you can’t afford. Very elementary economics. Simple supply and demand I’ll never understand left-wing NIMBYism. At least right-wing NIMBYism is rational.
@stormrobinson When the market-rate is only affordable to the top 10% of earners in places like New York and San Francisco and there’s only market-rate housing being built in those places there actually isn’t enough housing stock for people who can’t afford those units.
@stormrobinson The reality is there actually isn’t a huge demand for luxury “market-rate” housing in places like nyc and San Francisco. There’s a demand for middle-, low-, and very low-income housing and the demand isn’t being met.
@stormrobinson Where do people move when there isn’t actually housing they can afford?
@_celia_bedelia_ @stormrobinson People are dunking but imagine there is a backlog of all housing going back 50 years. First, you need to build lots of expensive housing to then be able to get to the “affordable” stuff you want to see. That’s all. It’s like a queue.
