@howie_hua Either are better than saying “one over 21” Language matters. A fraction is 1 number, not 2 Helping students understand that 3/12 is actually three one-twelfths is key to thinking fractionally. We wouldn’t call 12 “one beside two” So we shouldn’t call 1/12 “one over twelve”

A kid fell asleep during a quiz. I encouraged him to wake up and work, but he refused. At the end of the day, he asked if he could finish the quiz tomorrow. At first, I thought ABSOLUTELY NOT, but then I remembered that second chances are more important than proving my point.

#ElemMathChat The most successful teachers we have studied are those that teach to big ideas instead of methods. Work out the big ideas in your grade, and for each one find rich, deep activities. The methods come out as you teach to big ideas, that give enduring understanding.
