Abusers are certainly *capable* of change. However, most, even when provided the opportunities to do so, choose not to. This is bc abuse is not an individual pathology but an *ideology* which is supported by the dominant structures of society. Abusers BENEFIT from being abusers.

Love bombing is a specific tactic of abusers in which they shower you in excessive amounts of attention, admiration, and affection for a limited amount of time to develop a false sense of connection in order to make you feel beholden to your relationship with them. 🧵

When I see trans people trying to police the borders of transness/apply rigid definitions of trans identity I think about a 1996 interview with Leslie Feinberg & Kate Bornstein, two early trans theorists, in which they said that transgender is *any* kind of gender nonconformity.

What really gets me about folks paternalistically reminding abuse survivors about how much we need to remember our abuser’s humanity and find compassion for them is the fact that we are more connected w/ that reality than most people and it’s what kept us trapped in abuse.

As someone who grew up in neglect I think that people who haven't truly have no idea how much of the knowledge/skills they see as obvious or basic are, in fact, the products of care they received at a young age rather than a reflection of their innate superiority.

We live in a culture of abuse and so many depictions of love in popular media reflect that. We are constantly being told that stalking, harassment, ignoring boundaries, disregarding consent, using jealousy as a means of control, etc. are all manifestations of “true love.”

Anarchism doesn’t rely on the idea that there just won’t be any harmful people in an anarchistic world. Many of us recognize there will likely always be some harmful people, so it’s best not to keep around apparatuses of control that allow them to do that harm on a massive scale.

Reminder that the very reasons that people will list out to deny that someone is abusive “They’re so nice!”, “They seem to take such good care of their partner/child/friend.”, etc. are the very same qualities that make their continued perpetration of abuse possible.

Imo, the anarchist position on the pandemic is that if people had the resources stolen from them by the State & misinformation about the risks wasn’t proliferated by those looking to politicize it to build up their cut of State power, enough people would absolutely quarantine.

Reminder that fascists who do get sent to prison do not stop being fascists nor do they stop committing fascist violence. The difference is that the people they want to target are locked in cells with them and the people with the keys agree with them.

The difference between carceral logic and accountability is not actually the presence/lack of punishment. It lies in how much power the harmer has. Carceral logic strips them of their personal power, liberatory accountability processes require that they take ownership of it.
