Two questions: 1. Do you have a favorite book for a first course in undergrad algebra, and if so what is it and why? 2. To you, are group actions or group homomorphisms more fundamental things to think about?

I have a linear algebra student who is interested in doing a mini-project on "something related to matrices and binary." Ideas for references? Ideally it would be an intro to linear algebra over a field of order two, with applications, but any recs would be v welcome!
