🧵I don't usually bother with this stuff but... I see people suggesting the BBC has somehow indulged me because I'm riding a £7,000 bike. I feel compelled to set the record straight on a couple of points 1/3

This is my personal bike. I paid for it. It hasn't cost the BBC a penny. I bought it in 2020 to do 2 x 10k daily school runs. At the time the bike cost me around £4000. Yes, it's a lot of money. This bike has replaced my car. 2/3
@annaholligan Brilliant. I do home visits to my patients by @BromptonBicycle. Yes it is not the cheapest bike, but like you I sold a car to purchase it. It costs me about a set of tyres, brake pads and chain per year. Much less than the car it replaced irrespective of other benefits
@annaholligan 10k twice a day is a serious commitment. 👏 (Make sure you remind the kids of this in years to come when they start talking about picking out an OAP home for you!)
In fact, this bike retails new at less than the £5k today, not £7k urbanarrow.com/family-bikes/f… (which is obviously still 💰💰💰)
@annaholligan As I’m sure you know, if your employer was a Dutch company you would be paid something to cover your travel costs if you live more than 15kms from your place of work. Dutch employers also often subsidise the purchase of bicycles for getting to work - the Dutch govt promotes this.
@annaholligan @PaulMBigland You’ve saved yourself £thousands in annual car depreciation which is a cost everyone seems to forget about, and are helping save the planet from exhaust fumes etc.
